About
Inspired by Trapper Jeremy's shop Mainly Birch at the Yukon Crossing on the Dalton Highway in Alaska, Mainly Sticks curates pieces of trees. We invite others to share in the enjoyment and payment of our respect to these tree pieces as we slow their transition from majestic tree, to derelict log, to rich soil or ashes when they eventually rot or burn.
I began bringing chunks of wood into mine and others' homes to show that furniture is baloney - that different pieces of wood you find around can serve the same functions. But folks always want stuff sanded and finished a bit more. So I do that some times but I try to leave chainsaw marks visible so it doesn't start to look like 'actual furniture.' I prefer that each piece is still clearly a chunk of discarded wood.
Vancouver Birthday Stumps by Mainly Sticks are made from chunks of discarded wood found in and around the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. The stumps are curated to draw attention to each piece's personality and features.
